Manchester United and Barcelona will renew their rivalry after the Uefa Champions League Final when they face each other in the United States this July as part of an exhibition soccer tournament which will be title sponsored by Herbalife.
The Los Angeles-based firm has also become the official nutrition company of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge, which will feature European soccer powerhouses Barcelona, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Co-organised by Major League Soccer (MLS) and Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the Herbalife World Football Challenge will see the cream of European soccer taking on top MLS and Mexican Primera División clubs including Chicago Fire, Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, Vancouver Whitecaps, Club América and Club Deportivo Guadalajara.
Michael O. Johnson, chairman and chief executive of Herbalife, said: “The Herbalife World Football Challenge is a great opportunity to expand our commitment to a healthy active life through sports and is an ideal backdrop to launch our new line of sports products.”
The second World Football Challenge will take place between July and August, with soccer stadiums in Arlington, Chicago, Foxborough, Landover, Los Angeles, Miami and Vancouver all named as host venues. The debut edition of the World Football Challenge, which was won by English Premier League giants Chelsea, took place in 2009 across six American stadiums.
Herbalife has sponsorship arrangements with more than 100 different teams and athletes across the world, including Barcelona, Los Angeles Galaxy, Schalke 04, Spartak Moscow, Valencia and Lionel Messi.
Financial terms of Herbalife’s title sponsorship of the World Football Challenge were not released.
