Did you know?

  • Depending on your actual body composition, you may burn more or fewer calories. These numbers are only estimates.
  • Protein helps build lean body mass. Each kilogram of lean body mass burns about 28 calories per day; while fat tissue burns very few calories – only about 4 calories per kilogram per day. So, the more lean body mass, the more calories you burn each day.
  • If you are active, you will be burning more calories than your estimated resting metabolic rate.
  • If you eat about as many calories as you burn each day, your weight will stay about the same. If you consistently eat more, you will gain weight. If you eat consistently less, you will go down in weight.

Personalized Protein PowderShapeWorks™ Formula 3 Personalized Protein Powder is an excellent choice to help increase protein levels. It helps maintain safe and recommended protein intake. it Contains approximately 5 grams of soy protein, which contains isoflavones that can help maintain healthy cholesterol per level tablespoon. It contains whey protein, rich in cystine and methionine, which are vital to muscle development and has no fat, sugar, carbohydrates, yeast, cholesterol, salt, lactose, sweeteners or artificial colors.

Why does weight-loss slow down after a while on a slimming regime?

November 28th, 2007 by Herbalife Coach

In the short term, this is because when you begin a slimming diet, in the first week or two you will lose several pounds of weight which are fluid, not fat. After this, weight loss will be mainly fat.

For long-term slimmers, the main reason is that when you lose weight, your metabolic rate gradually slows down simply because you are getting smaller. When you were overweight, you will have been eating more than average to maintain that weight. For example, a woman of 12 stone may well have been eating 2,500 calories or so a day rather than the ‘average’ of 1,940. All she needs to do is cut down to say, 1,750 calories a day for daily ‘deficit’ of 750 calories, which will result in a weekly weight loss of 1½ pounds.

At 10 stone, however, she will be a fairly average weight and a daily diet of 1,750 calories is only slightly under the normal calorie intake (1,940) for a woman of her weight. To continue with good weight-loss, a diet of, say, 1,250 calories a day would be more appropriate. That would result in a daily calorie deficit of 690 calories and a loss of just under 1½ pounds a week.

For weight-loss to continue at a steady rate throughout any diet, you need gradually to cut the calorie content of the diet accordingly. In practical terms, it is probably best to be happy with slower weight-loss as you near target-weight and to increase your exercise levels a little to compensate.

Other reasons why weight-loss may slow down are that you have reached a reasonable body weight (you may have been aiming too low: check your BMI) or that you have begun eating more calories. Also, weight does fluctuate from day to day and week to week for a variety of reasons, including hormones, fluid levels, etc. Most women in the week before a period won’t lose weight at all and may indeed put a little on; this will disappear within days of the start of menstruation.

Why You Need More Fiber – and 6 Easy Ways to Get It

November 20th, 2007 by Herbalife Coach

A recent American Dietetic Association position paper reported that most of us don’t even come close to the recommended intake of 20 grams to 35 grams of fiber a day.

Why Is Fiber so Good for Us?

Eating a higher-fiber diet has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels, improve and prevent constipation, and slow digestion. And according to Barbara Rolls, PhD, author of The Volumetrics Eating Plan, fiber can help us eat less – and lose weight.
Some recent studies have shown that:

  • Eating a higher-fiber diet, as part of an overall healthful lifestyle, may play a role in a healthful BMI (body mass index). One study found that women who ate more whole grains and total fiber consistently gained less weight over 12 years than those who ate less fiber and whole grains.
  • A high-fiber diet may reduce your risk of colon cancer. If populations with a low average fiber intake suddenly doubled their fiber, they could lower their risk of colon cancer by 40%, according to a study involving data collected from 10 European countries.
  • Fiber may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Those who ate a diet high in refined carbohydrates and low in cereal fiber were more likely to increase their risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a recent study.

6 Ways to Get More Fiber

Before you start, keep a few things in mind: When you increase fiber, you should increase your water intake along with it. Add fiber gradually to give your gastrointestinal tract time to adapt. And if you have gastrointestinal diseases, including constipation, check with your doctor first.

    1. Go for whole grains whenever possible.
    2. Choose the right breakfast cereals.
    3. Eat beans a few times a week.
    4. Have several servings of fruit every day.
    5. Every day, stir a tablespoon of ground flaxseed into your smoothie, soup, casserole, etc.
    6. Have several servings of vegetables every day.

What does your BMI result mean?

November 17th, 2007 by Herbalife Coach

Once you have found out what your BMI (Body Mass Index) is, check below to see whether it indicates that you are underweight, a normal, healthy weight, overweight, or obese and what you should then do about your weight. If you do not know your BMI, please check it out here!

BMI

BMI 19.0 or below: Underweight
You need to eat more food to provide your body with the fuel it needs. You may need to eat more at each meal and have more snacks during the day. Be sure to choose nutritious foods from range of food groups.

BMI 19.0 – 24.9 Normal weight
You are eating the right amount to keep your weight at a healthy level, but you still need to make sure that your diet is balanced, health, and nutritious.

BMI 25 – 29.9: Overweight
it would be beneficial to your health if you lose some weight and avoid gaining any additional weight. Healthy eating and regular exercise will help to manage your weight long-term. Making just one or two adjustments to your diet each day, for example, cutting out high-fat or high sugar snacks, should result in a healthy, gradual weight loss.

BMI 30 – 34.9 Obesity (Class 1)
Your health may be at risk at your current weight. Look for healthy way of losing the excess weight; do not be tempted to try any “crash” diets, which could place more strain on your health.

BMI 35 – 39.9 Obesity (Class 2)
Your health is at risk at your current weight. You should find ways of changing your eating habits. You are advised to seek from your doctor or dietitian.

BMI 40 or higher: Obesity (Class 3)
Being this overweight poses a serious risk to your health. You are advised to seek advice from your doctor or dietitian for a weight-loss plan.

Diabetes – a Lifestyle Disease

November 14th, 2007 by Herbalife Coach

Diabetes (Diabetes mellitus) is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar), resistance to insulin, or both.

Diabetes - Herbalife

Causes, incidence, and risk actors:

To understand diabetes, it is important to first understand the normal process of food metabolism. Several things happen when food is digested:

  • A sugar called glucose enters the bloodstream. Glucose is a source of fuel for the body.
  • An organ called the pancreas makes insulin. The role of insulin is to move glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel.

People with diabetes have high blood glucose. This is because their pancreas does not make enough insulin or their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond to insulin normally, or both.

There are many risk factors for diabetes, including:

  • A parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Age greater than 45 years
  • Some ethnic groups (particularly African-Americans and Hispanic Americans)
  • Gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat molecule)
  • High blood cholesterol level

Symptoms:

High blood levels of glucose can cause several problems, including frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, weight loss, and blurry vision. However, because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar experience no symptoms at all.

Symptoms of diabetes:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing infections
  • Impotence in men

Treatment:

There is no cure for diabetes. The immediate goals are to stabilize your blood sugar and eliminate the symptoms of high blood sugar. The long-term goals of treatment are to prolong life, relieve symptoms, and prevent long-term complications such as heart disease and kidney failure.

Diabetes a lifestyle disease

Now’s the ideal time to learn about the impact Herbalife nutrition can have on this devastating disease. For the past 27 years we have witnessed incredible health stories from our customers and distributors. These occur not because our nutritional supplements are specific therapies for medical conditions, but because the Herbalife “way of life” produces profound health benefits. Now, the medical community has proven the ability of weight loss and exercise to prevent the development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Reduce your risk of diabetes naturally

Diabetes - HerbalifeIn an article published in the May 3, 2001, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, 522 overweight, middle-aged subjects with elevated sugars were studied. Those individuals who reduced their weight, by limiting their intake of fat, increasing their intake of fiber and engaging in physical activity, had a 58 percent reduction in the development of diabetes.

Reducing caloric intake, limiting bad fats and increasing fiber in the diet can help reduce developing a devastating disease. This means the healthy nutrition you and your loved ones consume is an effective way to reduce a disease that has become epidemic. Diabetes has gained prominence because it affects younger and younger people.

Herbalife products and diabetics

Distributors frequently ask if our products are appropriate for diabetics. The answer is an unequivocal yes. Healthy weight loss, and notably restricting carbohydrates, may be the most beneficial nutritional approach to preventing diabetes.

However, there is an important caution. People who are being treated with insulin or oral medications to lower their blood sugar should be advised that as they improve their diet and lose weight, their blood sugar levels may fall. Therefore, if a customer or distributor is on medication for diabetes, they must be supervised by their physician to ensure that they do not develop hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and their medications are adjusted appropriately.

It is recommended to lose weight with Herbalife Shapeworks™ Weight-Management, weight loss with Herbalife is simple to achieve. It can maintain the health benefits from losing weight using Herbalife products and reduce their likelihood of becoming diabetic, by as much as 60 percent, according to studies!
